LOCAL TIP

Best 6 Road Trips

From Jersey City

Right across the Hudson from the island of Manhattan is Jersey City. As part of the greater New York City metro area, a lot is happening in and around the Jersey City area; however, you're not confined to the greater metro - you want to explore! And let us help you with some ideas of places to check out and spend some time!

1. Trenton

Travel time: 64 miles (1 hour 15 minutes)

Located on the Delaware River southwest of Jersey City, Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and a short drive away (our fastest on the list).

The Old Barracks Museum is a step back in time. Constructed in 1758 to house British troops during the French and Indian War, it became a military hospital during the Revolutionary War. See people dressed in old troop uniforms, walk the grounds, and check out the historical artifacts.

Another great museum in the city is the New Jersey State Museum which is all-purpose and highly regarded. If you're in town from Thursday to Sunday, check out the Trenton Farmers Market to get some fresh, locally grown produce and food!

2. Atlantic City

Travel time: 124 miles (2 hours 25 minutes)

Atlantic City is a popular destination within New Jersey as it not only sits on the beautiful Atlantic coastline it also boasts a handful of casinos. Among them are the Hard Rock, Borgata, Caesars, and Harrahs, so you're sure to have a good time if you're a gambler.

But there is so much more for those who don't care to gamble. Most famous is the Atlantic City boardwalk. Anything you could want is along this stretch, including the Steel Pier Amusement Park. If you're looking to shop on a budget, check out the Tanger Outlets, which includes stores like H&M, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Gap.

3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Travel time: 91 miles (1 hour 50 minutes)

The original capital of our country is only less than two miles away. Philadelphia packs a lot of history within the city. The museums themselves would take you days to get through. Eastern State Penitentiary, Barnes, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of the American Revolution, and more.

Speaking of history, what would a trip to Philadelphia be without visiting the historic Liberty Bell? The Reading Terminal Market is a must-visit location with over 80 concessions and hours of walking and browsing. Finally, visit Elfreth's Alley - America's oldest residential and longest continually inhabited street.

4. Wilmington, Delaware

Travel time: 120 miles (2 hours 5 minutes)

Just over two hours away, Wilmington is worth a visit. A stroll on the Wilmington Riverwalk is sure to have something for everyone. You get a great view of the Wilmington Skyline, and not only that, you get easy to access to nearby restaurants and shopping. Head to the Nemours Estate to see a beautifully maintained 77-room mansion and immaculate grounds.

Finally, visit the Brandywine Creek State Park if you want to see some nature. You'll surely see some unique flora and fauna along with your hikes.

5. Baltimore, Maryland

Travel time: 184 miles (3 hours 25 minutes)

For the readers out there, you need to visit the Peabody Library. It's like something out of the movies - they don't make libraries like that anymore, so it's a treat. Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is worth a visit. Part of the National Park Service, it was the site of the Battle of Baltimore in 1812. This is where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the national anthem.

Check out Fell's Point, which predates the city of Baltimore itself. This historic district dates back to the 1700s and has historical buildings, antique stores, bars and restaurants, and much more.

For history buffs, the Smithsonian museum is a must. For aspiring politicians, what better place to see how our government runs than by visiting The White House and Capitol Hill? You can see the Capitol, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress. Make sure to visit the monuments like the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
