LOCAL TIP

Best 6 Road Trips

From Washington D.C.

The Nation's Capital is a unique place within the United States. It's not a part of any state and is not a state itself (though there have been efforts over the years to make D.C. a state.) The history here stretches way back, and it shows everywhere you go. History is part of why D.C. is one of the most visited places in the United States. But if you live in Washington D.C., sometimes you want to explore what's beyond the boundaries of your federal district. We'll feature six places below:

1. Richmond, Virginia

Travel time: 109 miles (1 hour 50 minutes)

Richmond is the capital of Virginia, so take a trip from the Nation's capital to Virginia's capital. Make a stop at the Virginia Capitol Building for the political and local government buffs out there. As you step inside, you can learn about the history of the state of Virginia. Housed in the oldest building in Richmond is the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, which includes many artifacts from Edgar Allen Poe's life. The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is extensive and beautiful. So vast and beautiful that people take gardening classes, have business meetings, and even get married here.

2. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Travel time: 209 miles (3 hours 20 minutes)

If you're heading to Virginia Beach on vacation, you may simply be going for a good time at the beach. And you can undoubtedly dig your toes in the sand in Virginia Beach. You can also walk (or cycle) the boardwalk, which is 3 miles long. Keep an eye out for the statue of King Neptune! Head to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center to learn about the local ecosystem. You'll be able to see a bunch of sea life and experience nature hands-on here. Finally, check out First Landing State Park, Virginia's most popular state park.

3. Charlottesville, Virginia

Travel time: 116 miles (2 hours 15 minutes)

There are vineyards all over the Charlottesville area, so for wine enthusiasts, this may be a great destination (a reminder not to drink and drive)! Take a look at the back of a standard nickel. That building is Monticello, and you can find that in Charlottesville! It was the home of President Thomas Jefferson and now serves as a museum filled with historical artifacts. Historic Downtown Mall is an expansive and beautiful mall in downtown Charlottesville, where you'll be able to shop and dine!

4. Roanoke, Virginia

Travel time: 240 miles (4 hours)

Mill Mountain Star & Park is an absolute must-see when coming to Roanoke. Not only does this park offer hiking, biking, and the largest manmade star in the world, but it also offers a zoo! For fans of the show Salvage Dawgs, check out Black Dog Salvage, where they display their salvaged and renovated items. And for the child inside all of us, the Roanoke Pinball Museum will be that much-needed fun pit-stop for kids and adults alike.

5. Baltimore, Maryland

Travel time: 40 miles (1 hour 5 minutes)

The Walters Art Museum is a stunning building featuring stunning art from the past 7,000 years, and it's free for all! The B&O Railroad Museum is a must-see for fans of the railroad system. Located in a restored roundhouse, you can learn about and envision the evolution of the train industry. While Richmond, Virginia has a museum that celebrated Edgar Allen Poe's life, Baltimore houses Edgar Allen Poe's grave site. Poetry fans worldwide come to this location to pay their respects.

6. Raleigh, North Carolina

Travel time: 278 miles (4 hours 30 minutes)

Yet another capital on the list! Raleigh has an extensive craft beer scene for which it's well known! State Farmers Market is a massive 2-acre farmers market with fresh foods and fresh eats! For fans of art, go to the North Carolina Museum of Art. Not only do they display some cool things (permanent and temporary exhibitions), but they also have gorgeous outdoor grounds. Umstead State Park is an oasis between two large highways in the northwest part of the city. Tranquil and beautiful, you get a real sense of what Raleigh is about ecologically.
